Recap: Sept. 14

Thanks to everyone who came out to last Friday’s slam! It was a great night, with an excellent performance from our surprise feature, McPherson, of the Nuyorican Poets’ Cafe in New York City. You never know what’s going to happen when the art runs amok,

We had a 2-in-1 slam, as poets from the 2012 team competed for a spot in the Individual World Poetry Slam and while other poetss competed in a regular 3 round, 3-minute slam. All poets received points toward the Grand Slam Final and the chance to get a spot on next year’s slam team. For more info about how that works, check out the About Us page. The final standings for the night are as follows:

Name Points Earned
Gabe Moses 7
Hillary Kobernick 6
Marshall Gillson 5
Theresa Davis 4
A. Morey 3
JAWS 2
Carly L. 1

Congratulations to Gabe Moses, who will be the ArtAmok! representative at IWPS. It was good to see some old faces, looking stronger than ever, and some new faces. Theresa rocked the room with “The Truth about Jaguars,” and A. Morey roused the whole crowd for the “Virgin Poem.” Carly L. did great in her second slam ever, and the crowd loved her. Come back again!

Our next slam is Sept. 28. It will be a regular 2 round, 3 minute slam, with an open mic, and a feature by the very talented, very musical, Ken J. As always, we’ll be at In Tune Music Studio, doors open at 7:30pm and we’ll start at 8:00pm.

It was so much fun you might want to see it again! And lucky you, there’s a few videos from the night on YouTube. Be sure to check out McPherson‘s work. It was a pleasure to have him feature!

Second Friday Slam and Open Mic on Sept. 14

hillary

Darlings, we’re well-rested and back from summer vacation. And we are dancing in our socks to see you on September 14. We’re kicking off the 2012-2013 Slam Season with a spicy slam and swinging open mic. Everyone–poets, musicians, haiku specialists–is welcome to the open mic. The slam is our IWPS qualifier, which means you will need one poem each that fits in the 1 minute, 2 minute, 3 minute, and 4 minute time slot. The poems don’t have to be memorized, but they do have to be original. If you need more tips on how to prepare for the slam, check out the About Us page.

This slam does not count for points toward the Art Amok! slam season, but the winner WILL have the opportunity to represent Art Amok! at the Individual World Poetry Slam this fall.

We’ll see you next Friday! Remember, 7:30pm doors open, 8:00pm start. There is no feature this Friday, so if you want to slam, be on time! We’re only taking the first 9 poets for the slam.
