This Saturday, we’re hosting a massive, multi-family yard sale. There will be household goods, furniture, clothes, shoes, books, and more! The proceeds will support our trip to the National Poetry Slam in August. It’s happening at 69 Walthall St. SE, Atlanta, just a few blocks off Moreland. We’ll be going from 8am-3pm. Stop by and find some treasures.

Next Slam and Open Mic on Friday, April 26

That’s right! We’ve got an open mic and slam coming up this Friday. Musicians, poets, comedians, and storytellers welcome on the open mic. We’ll also have a Dead Poet Slam–bring two poem by your favorite dead poet and slam with those poems. All the details are on the events page. We’ll see you there!

Next month, we’ll have slams on May 10 and May 24. On May 10, come see featured poet Miss Haze, one of Atlanta’s most talented poets! On May 24, we’ve got another amazing local feature, Theresa Davis, celebrating her book release and birthday. Mark your calendars now.

Oh, you want to write poems? Workshop with Denise Jolly this Saturday

Feeling a little writer’s block? Falling behind on NaPoWriMo? Wish you got to do more writing with other poets? Art Amok! is sponsoring a workshop with this week’s featured poet, Denise Jolly. Denise is a national touring artist and educator, currently touring with Andrea Gibson. This workshop is meant to empower individual voice expressed through a series of writing prompts and group discussions examining sample poems. Please come ready to speak, write and build community through the process of writing in a shared space. We welcome all poets interested in deepening their voices and hearing others.

Where: Grant Park Coffeehouse (753A Cherokee Ave SE, next to In Tune Music Studio)
When: Saturday, April 13
Time: Noon
Cost: Donation of $10, but pay what you can.

Denise Jolly took 5th place in the Women of the World national poetry slam last month. Join us for a workshop with her this Friday.

Grand Slam Results

As promised, last night’s slam was the best of the year! The poets performed their hearts out, and we wanted all of them to be on the team! But, what is poetry without the competition? And so we are proud to announce the 2013 Art Amok! Slam Team. Congratulations to Gabe Moses, JAWS, Shlya, A. Morey, and Hillary Kobernick.

Thanks to Theresa Davis and Malika for hosting, and to everyone who came out to support some amazing art. We’ve posted some videos of last night on our YouTube channel, so head over and check it out.

Our next slam will be April 12. We’ll have an open mic and open slam with feature Denise Jolley. If you have not met Denise Jolley, prepare to have your mind blown. She was on the finals stage of the Women of the World Poetry Slam earlier this month, and her poems are full of love, light, and a little dose of fury.

Grand Slam on March 22

It’s the event you’ve been waiting for! Our top poets will be slamming in the Grand Slam on March 22, competing for a spot on the 2013 Art Amok! Slam Team. The following poets are eligible for the Grand Slam:

Our slam on March 22 will have an open mic, so if you’re not slamming, you’re still welcome to come out and share a poem or song. All poets should be at the slam on time. If you are late, we will start the slam without you. This is our biggest slam of the year, so come out and support your favorite poets. If you don’t know any of these poets, or you’ve never been to a poetry slam, we’d love to have you judge! A slam can’t happen without judges.

We are excited to hold our Last Chance Slam featuring Janelle Faiman next Friday, March 8.

What do you mean, last chance? you ask. We mean it’s your LAST CHANCE to qualify for the Grand Slam Finals, where we choose the top poets in ATL to represent join the Art Amok! Slam Team and compete at the National Poetry Slam. The top 10 poets from the whole season compete in this slam (you can see who’s on top right now by checking our Standings page).

Our feature, Janelle Faiman, is a Nashville-based musician with a voice that is both sultry and powerful. You can check out several of her songs here and while you’re at it, listen to this video:

Thanks to everyone who joined us at the first Friday slam! We had a great feature from Nikki White and JAWS, and a fantastic slam. There were several brand new poems, and new faces on the open mic.
